Cristiano Ronaldo earned the Golden Boot at Euro 2020 on Sunday, capping up a record-breaking campaign for the Portugal captain.

His Golden Boot was officially awarded after Italy defeated England in a penalty shootout to win the Euros on Sunday night at Wembley Stadium.

Ronaldo, 36, finished the tournament with five goals for Portugal, the same amount as Czech Republic striker Patrik Schick, with Ronaldo's one assist enough to proclaim him the Golden Boot winner based on the criteria used by UEFA to rank the competitors. To determine an outright winner, UEFA considers assists as a tiebreaker, followed by the fewest minutes played and, if required, goals scored in qualifying.

In addition to finishing as the tournament's top scorer, the Juventus striker set a number of other records. He scored twice in Portugal's 3-0 win against Hungary to become the all-time men's best scorer at the European Championship, surpassing Michel Platini's 11 goals with France before finishing with 14 goals overall.

Ronaldo scored three of his five goals from the penalty spot. His late penalty put the finishing touches on Portugal's opening triumph against Hungary, before another two secured a 2-2 draw with France, ensuring the reigning champions through to the knockout round. Between those came a spectacular performance in a 4-2 loss to Germany, in which he ran the length of the pitch to cap off a quick counter-attack.

Ronaldo also played in a record sixth European Championship – no other guy has done so – while also tying Iran's Ali Daei for the most international goals with 109. Portugal, who won Euro 2016 in France, were eliminated in the round of 16 after falling 1-0 to Belgium.

Meanwhile, with 11 own goals scored, Euro 2020 comfortably eclipsed the total amount of own goals scored at every prior European Championship combined, with only nine recorded throughout the previous 15 editions.
