How India reach 2011 World Cup finals
The Dhoni-led team India squad lost no more than one game in the whole tournament and while South Africa managed to defeat them, their battle against England came out to be a high-scoring tie. Team India then defeated Australia in the quarter-final in Ahmedabad. At that time, team Australia was the reigning champion. India managed to prevent them from reaching the finals for the first time since 1992.
India faced nemesis team Pakistan in the semi-finals at Mohali, where legend Sachin Tendulkar won the Player of the Match for an 85-run knock. Long story short, team India managed to defeat them and made it to their first finals since the 2003 world Cup, thanks to the Indian bowlers defending well.

Finally, in the finals, team Sri-Lanka batted first following a double toss. Sri Lanka was leading throughout the match, leaving team India with a 274-run target to chase. Anchoring the innings was Mahela Jayawardene who scored a century.
Gautam Gambhir then managed to score 97 and the then-22-year-old Virat Kohli contributed 30 odd runs. Kohli and Gambhir were left to shoulder the burden of team India after Lasith Malinga caused Virender Sehwag to be dismissed following a duck. Also removed from the field was legend Sachin Tendulkar.
The match ended with Dhoni making a 91 after promoting himself over Player of the Tournament Yuvraj Singh. With Gambhir, he added more than 100 runs. They were three runs away from winning the match before Dhoni hit Nuwan Kulasekara for a six. Team India was then declared the winner of the World Cup.
