IPL 2022: Rahul Tripathi leads Sunrisers Hyderabad to win against KKR by seven wickets

Sunrisers Hyderabad had their third consecutive win after they defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by seven wickets in Match 25 of the Indian Premier League on Friday at Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.

Hyderabad started out smooth with skipper Kane Williamson winning the toss and choosing to bowl first against Kolkata. Later in the game, however, Williamson only managed 17 runs. It was Rahul Tripathi and Aiden Markram who scored big and aided the team in achieving their 175 in 17/5 overs target. Tripathi smashed an unparalleled 71 off 37 balls, in addition to Markram’s 68 not out off 36.

On the other hand, Kolkata made 175/8 after being put in to bat, with top scorer Nitish Rana smashing 54 off 36 balls as well as Andre Russell’s 49 off 25 balls.

Hyderabad’s victory gave them two points on the leader board, putting them in seventh place now with six points from three wins and two losses across five matches. The Bollywood actor-owned franchise KKR, on the other hand, is still holding out at number four with six points from three wins and three losses across six matches.

Rahul Tripathi’s star of the show

Tripathi as the ‘Man of the Match’ expressed his contentment over his successful innings against Kolkata. He said that Hyderabad had put up a good show in the last few matches.

"I enjoyed myself today. The time with KKR was special, and now it is special with KKR as well. There are days when things get tough, but I enjoy the hard work and the good days. Before going in to bat, I am a little fidgety, but I am happy that I got this innings today," the SRH batter said post-match.

Reminiscing their celebrated victory, he added, "Russell bangs it in short if you are new, and I was looking for that shot if the ball was there. Varun bowls well, I didn't expect him to pitch it up and that's why I went through with that lofted shot. It wasn't premeditated."

Rahul Tripathi currently has the most runs in the IPL as an uncapped player. With 171 runs at a strike rate of 178.12, Tripathi is also Hyderabad’s highest run-scorer. So far, he has scored more than 1500 runs across 65 matches.

For this, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan gave him a nod. He wrote, "Every year Rahul Tripathi comes to [IPL,] does his job quietly but surely. Most impressive Uncapped batter!"

Nitish Rana’s strong defence

Rana’s 54 off 36 deliveries saved the game and prevented KKR from an ultimate loss. Not only did his performance save the team, but it also saved him as his previous scores were one of Kolkata’s concerns. He had scored 21, 10, 0, 8 and 30 previously; and he was in danger of following Ajinkya Rahane’s footsteps of being shown the exit door for his shaky play.

Apart from Rana, the Knight Riders' game was also sustained by Andre Russell and captain Shreyas Iyer as they scored in double figures. Rana was noticeably supported by Russell’s cameo play as he served 49 off 25 balls in addition to Iyer’s aiding 28 off 25.

Kolkata will proceed to play against the Rajasthan Royals on April 18 at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai.
