IPL 2022: Rohit Sharma gets fined ₹24 lakh following loss against Punjab Kings

The Mumbai Indians (MI) suffered another devastating loss in their fifth match in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, this time at the hands of the Punjab Kings (PBKS). Mumbai, led by captain Rohit Sharma lost 12 runs to the Kings in the match which took place at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Wednesday. The Indians' losing streak in the IPL this season continues.

Their loss to Punjab was MI's fifth consecutive loss in IPL 2022. Mumbai is the only team in IPL 2022 that has not managed to win a single game since the start of the season. Because MI's game was so messy, after the match the captain and team members were immediately punished. Surely this is bad news for the team captain and the Indians players.

“The Mumbai Indians have been fined after they maintained a slow over rate during their TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 match against Punjab Kings at the MCA Stadium, Pune on April 13,” the IPL released a statement. It also mentioned penalties for the captain and the players in detail.

As the player in charge of his entire team, captain Sharma got fined ₹24 lakhs after that match. The ₹24 lakh fine he got for maintaining a slow over rate in the game. Meanwhile, the other MI members were fined ₹6 lakhs.

Second Offence

This is the second offence from the Indians in the 2022 IPL under the IPL Code of Conduct regarding minimum over rate offences. “Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma was fined ₹24 lakhs and the rest of the members in the playing eleven were fined ₹6 lakhs or 25 per cent of their match fee, whichever is lower,” it added.

Previously, Sharma was fined ₹12 lakh for the same issue in Mumbai's first match in IPL 2022 against the Delhi Capitals (DC) last month. “We’ve been not playing good cricket for a while and that’s why we’ve been on the losing side, as simple as that,” said Sharma said following the fifth straight defeat in Mumbai.

Reflecting on Mumbai's back-to-back losses, captain Sharma admitted after the game that PBKS had a great match and put pressure on MI bowlers.

“The Kings batted pretty well upfront and put pressure on our bowlers, got a 90-100 run partnership to begin with. But I thought 190+ was chaseable on that pitch because that pitch was really good to bat on as you saw when we were batting as well. We just have to go back and see what we do as a team.” said the 34-year-old cricketer.

With poor results and losing five games in a row, MI looks one step closer to elimination. However, the MI team is still determined to perform more optimally and improve their performance in the next match. Next up, MI will take on the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on April 16. Meanwhile, for the Kings, this is their third win in the IPL this season.
