Chennai Super Kings decided to retain 4 very strong players in talismanic captain MS Dhoni, in-form all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, the young star Ruturaj Gaekwad, and English all-rounder Moeen Ali, meaning their squad already had a solid core before the 2022 IPL Auction.

They also ended up releasing some major long-serving stars like Suresh Raina, Shardul Thakur and FAF Du Plessis, while they managed to buy back Dwayne Bravo and Santner in the auction. CSK also spent big to acquire the services of Chris Jordan, Deepak Chahar, Shivam Dube etc. 

Kolkata Knight Riders retained the services of Andre Russel, Varun Chakaravarthy, Venkatesh Iyer and Sunil Narine. They bought back Nitish Rana and Pat Cummins, while also splashing big on Shreyas Iyer, former Delhi Capitals captain who cost a whopping 12.25 crores. They have also added Ajinkya Rahane to ensure a very solid batting line-up.
