The Mumbai Indians will have a match against Gujarat Titans for the 51st match of the 2022 IPL. Unfortunately, the team announced that pacer Tymall Mills suffered an ankle injury and will not be playing for the rest of the season. As a result, the Indians called on a South African player, Tristan Stubbs, to fill the vacant spot.
Mumbai Indians to call Tristan Stubbs following Tymal Mills injury
Tristan Stubbs
Stubbs is a talented young player and made his debut while playing with the national South African A Squad against Zimbabwe. He has a good record in the domestic season and was one of the most important players for his team in the T20 domestic league.
The 21-year-old played 17 T20 matches and recorded 506 runs. He gained his record by scoring three half-centuries with a 157.14 strike rate. According to IPL’s official release, Subbs was bought for INR 20 Lakh and will join the MI squad for the rest of the season.
Stubbs also played in the 2021-22 CSA Provincial One-day Challenge Division One. He scored 154 runs with an average of 25.66 from six matches. Stubbs also recorded a strike rate of 89.01. The middle order batsman also participated in the 2021-22 CSA T20 Challenge and struck the second-highest run-getter title with 293 runs, three 50s at 48.83, and a strike rate of 183.12.
Tymal Mills and the Indians’ performance
Before he sustained an ankle injury, Mills played five matches with the Indians this season. His last match was on April 16, when the Mumbai Indians were up against the Lucknow Super Giants. In that match, Mills scored 54 runs from three wicketless overs.
In the 2022 IPL, Mills collected six wickets with an average of 31.66. The record was not his best and that it was an up and down ride for Mills instead this season. And now, the player has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to his injury. Once he has recovered from his minor injury, Mills is expected to return on May 26 for Sussex's first T20 Blast game.
IPL fans witnessed how the Indians were not performing really well during this season. The five-time IPL winner faced a hard situation where they lost all of their first eight matches. The MI just got their maiden win in the 44th match, where they defeated the Rajasthan Royals by five wickets with four balls left.
Mills’ economy rate of 11.50 in five matches was also the worst record of all MI pacers with five or more overs. The MI's showed an underperformance attack from their bowling department throughout this season.
Mumbai Indians’ upcoming match
MI will face Gujarat Titans for their upcoming match at Brabourne Stadium on Friday. Looking at the records, the match is expected to be difficult for the Indians because they will face the IPL standings’ top dweller, the Gujarat Titans.
Hardik Pandya, who used to play for MI, is now a key player for GT. The Indians didn’t retain Pandya and he ended up with the Titans while leading the scoring with 309 runs. Pandya will also play with his teammates Shubman Gill, David Miller, and Rahul Tewatia, who are the key players for MI. For their attack strategy, the team put Mohammed Shami, Lockie Ferguson, and Rashid Khan together to form a strong formation.
While MI will mostly rely on Rohit Sharma for runs, If the Indians win the upcoming match, the victory will regain MI’s long lost pride. On the other hand, GT will be the first team to secure a playoff spot if they win over MI in the upcoming match.
