IPL 2022: Mumbai Indians defeat table topper Gujarat Titans

The Mumbai Indians registered their second win of this season after winning over Gujarat Titans by five runs in Friday’s match.

The match was held at the Brabourne Stadium and finished with a final score of 177/6 in 20.0 overs for MI and 172/5 in 20.0 overs for GT.

Despite the two consecutive losses, the Titans still remain at the top of the 2022 IPL table.

As for MI, the team has already been out of contention for this season’s playoffs.

Mumbai Indians’ strike

Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Tim David's teamwork led to another victory for the Mumbai Indians.

Rohit contributed 43 off 28 balls and David scored 44 not out off 22 balls. In the last over, David registered another two sixes, which helped the team to win the match.

Kishan was the top-scorer for the team with 45 off 29 balls. In the fifth over, Kishan also smashed bowler Rashid Khan for a couple of fours.

Moreover, Kishan sent Rahul Tewatia over mid-wicket after MI scored 63 with no loss.

In the bowling department, Murugan Ashwin caught two wickets for 29 runs and all-rounder Kieron Pollard caught one wicket. Ashwin also dismissed the Titans’ openers in the 13th over while aiming for the big shots.

MI were struggling at the beginning of the match due to the Titans' opening duo of Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill. This GT's opening pair contributed 106 runs in 12.1 overs.

The Gujarat Titans held up

Choosing to bowl first, GT was off to a good start thanks to the team's opening pair—Gill and Saha—that scored 106 runs.

Gill himself scored 55 off 40 balls, while Saha recorded 52 off 36 deliveries. This pair also shared four sixes and a dozen boundaries.

Saha also knocked out the Indians' Jasprit Bumrah and scored two fours and a six. He continued to smash Riley Meredith for two boundaries.

Gill added another four after a clean hit and swept Ashwin to gain six. Kumar Kartikeya also contributed by scoring 15 runs for the Titans.

The scoring saga continued with Alzzari Joseph, Pradeep Sangwan, and Lockie Ferguson, who caught one wicket each.

Despite the good start, the Titans kept losing crucial wickets. GT only needed nine runs in the last over to beat MI, but the team only managed to score three runs and lost one wicket.

GT’s captain, Hardik Pandya, gave his remarks about the match, saying that his side had played a good game.

"We played good cricket for 19.2 overs in our innings. One of two hits would have made a difference (but) we should not have let it come down to the last over," Pandya said.

The Titans are currently in the top place of the 2022 IPL table with a total of 16 points. The team played 11 matches and won eight victories.

GT also had a +0.120 NRR record. Pandya’s team will have another match against the Lucknow Super Giants in the 57th match on May 10. The match will be held at MCA Stadium at 7:30 PM.
